The Examination is held once a year (usually in October/November) and is designed for candidates who have completed three years of full-time secondary schooling or its equivalent. The Scheme of Examination makes provision for candidates who are studying through non-formal means, as well as those engaged in full-time education. There is no age limit for candidates.

BEC is mandated under section 5 of the Botswana Examinations Council Act (Act No 11 of 2002) as amended by the Botswana Examinations Amendment Act, 2019 to manage, conduct examinations and assessments in general education and technical, vocational education and training and to award certificates in respect of the said examinations and assessments.
